I aced the CTO so now, whatever else may happen, I qualify to go civilian with the FAA and at least apply to get a facility rating. That’s a bit of a relief, to be honest.

I’ve got a lot more to do, a move to another base and a year in additional training, but I’ve overcome a big hurdle on this one.

Right now I’m in training to be a military Air Traffic Controller. I’m three months into a four month course, with 4 out of 5 blocks of training completed. Tomorrow I take a Control Tower Operator certification test to qualify to operate in a control environment, and I’ve already completed the radar approach control sections of the course so I have basic operational proficiency in that.

Currently I’m studying the fundamentals of control tower operation before going to a month of simulator runs at a basic and then later an advanced level, after which I’ll go to my first base assignment as a tower controller.

It’s really stressful, really difficult and extremely exciting stuff. I love and hate this job for a lot of different reasons, but overall I’m glad I have the opportunity to prove myself in the schoolhouse and then in the career field. It feels elite, like I’m doing something so few people can or will do, that’s tough as nails and exclusive to the very best. I fear failure every day going forward but I always hope to achieve the goal of passing on to the next level.

I’m an Airman in the USAF now.

I’m going to the hotel I’ll be staying before heading to MEPS tomorrow, and then I’m heading back to the air base to swear in, get a quick physical and then depart from the airport for basic training.

Eight and a half weeks of that and then we’ll see how things are.

Basically for the next 80+ days I just have to hang around the house, stay healthy and work out a bit. It’s been really boring, having no goal to work towards or anything at all to really do besides just killing time until I finally leave for basic training.

December 10th, and then eight and a half or more weeks which means I’m going to be in it for Christmas and my birthday, which’ll be rough but doable.

On the plus side, I signed a six-year contract as part of the Air Traffic Control thing so once I complete tech school I get in at E-3 paygrade, so I’ll be making a decent amount of money right out the gate.

Update on life: I’ve got a contract to become an Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force now, and I’m set to leave for basic training on December 10th.

Only two months since I swore in, and already I’ve got the top pick on my list. I was afraid it was going to drag on for months and month, and yeah I don’t ship out for about five months but at least I’ve got a clearer goal and set time in mind now.

I haven’t checked in here for a while, and I’m sorry for that.

Big news though, I joined the United States Air Force! I’m in the DEP until July 23rd, after which it could be anywhere between 1 and 12 months until I get a contract and a ship date.

At MEPS I fucked up on the depth-perception test so I got DQ’d for Aircraft Loadmaster, but I put down a bunch of avionics tech, intelligence and a few other general positions down. Total count was like 18, so I’m confident I’ll get something before too long and get shipped out as quickly as possible.

But yeah, this is really happening, my life in the military is really starting and I’m only realizing now how woefully ill-prepared I am for that. I’m starting up on a four-month fitness course to try and kick my ass into shape for BMT, I’m getting my driver’s license and I’m trying to buckle my life down in preparation for it all.

Here’s hoping everything goes according to plan.
